Old Johnson 9.9 Outboard?

I was recently given an old fishing boat with a Johnson 9.9 outboard with what looks to be very little hours on it. I know nothing about boat motors and am looking for some info. This motor I assume is a 2 stroke, what would the mix be on a motor like this? Is there anything I should do over the winter to make sure its water ready come summer? What is a general age for a motor like this so I have an idea when I need parts? Thanks for any info.

You should be able to get virtually and part you may need right here at iboats too. Here's a link to an exploded parts diagram for your motor. It should help you track down part numbers, etc.....

Just click on your year, then your particular hp and model. You should be able to find a model number stamped onto an aluminum tag, which is usually riveted to the transom clamp.

I can see you've experienced freezing conditions already. I would drop the lower unit to vertical and open the gear case drain to make certain no water is in there. Best of luck. Rick.

50:1 mix of TCW-3 oil. That's a fantastic motor you've got there. Worth $500+ in my area. And as mentioned, isn't near "old" yet :)

I have that same motor. Mine is a 1981. I think yours is a 1983. Just change the lower unit oil, water pump impeller, and thermostat and you are good to go. Man you are a lucky guy to have been gifted that thing!! Beautiful little motors they are!!!!!!! P.S. if you need any advice or directions on anything to do with that motor feel free to send me a P.M. I have had mine for years and I know it very, very well.
