old johnson chargeing system MIA????

i bought this old glasspar boat with a 67 johnson golden meteor 100 hp. v4
i have a few questions im brand new to boating so i have no clue what iam looking at here. 1st http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll142/texml/boatmotor001.jpg what is this?? i know its part of the chargeing sys.? 2nd.http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll142/texml/boatmotor002.jpg and iam not even sure what this box is called ( the silver one on the block)?.... and finaly does this boat use a generator or a alternater??? if so is it missing something here in this pic like a generator???? and if so would the belt on it run from the mag to the gen. then to the distbuterhttp://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll142/texml/boatmotor003.jpg any in put will help trying to peice this back togather

First picture: The rectifier diodes are under that black plastic cover. Two Positive diodes and two negative diodes.

Second picture: Voltage regulator.

Third picture: Forget it. Does not apply. Is for different models.

You have an alternator. It is under the flywheel, with the external components just mentioned.

You didn't say if it was not working or if you are just looking at stuff. (?)

EDIT: Well I guess you did say it isn't working. Test the rectifier diodes first. No, I take that back too. First make sure everything is connected properly. You really do need a service manual. Errors can be much more costly.

yes i bought a cylmer manual but the problem i have is the wires coming from the recitifer ? are cut there (the 2 yellow wires ) so this is a alternater unit as aposed to a generater? and yes its not workin when the boat is running it shows - on then ammeter

as well as 2 more wires that run from the regulator i belive any advice where to start on this thing?

Well, that confirms my suspicion when I suggested it may not be wired correctly. It certainly cannot work with cut wires!!!

I don't know what info the Clymer manual gives, but they sure get bad press here. A "real" factory manual would have told you everything you need to know about the system, along with a "real" wiring diagram.

Yes, it is an alternator. It supplies AC through the two yellow wires to the four rectifiers that change it to DC to charge the battery.
