Old Johnson lube advice needed

I just inherited a 1972 Johnson 2hp motor (model 2R72). Remarkably, the manual came with the motor.

The manual specifies OMC Type "A", OMC Type "C" and Grease Gun OMC Type "A". Went to a marina and they had no idea what this stuff was. Type C seems to be for the gearcase only and Type A, a general lubricant.

Does anyone know the modern equivalent to these lubricants? I'd hate to ruin this motor after 32 years.

TIA,

Henry

Rwise is correct, Type C is now known as Premium Blend. However, in another recent thread Paul Moir says that Johnson withdrew the recommendation to use Premium Blend in manual shift lower units, and Hi-Vis is now the recommended lube.

Thanks. I plan to change the gear oil and use the motor this weekend. Apparently, the motor was working fine last fall. However, I want to make sure the water pump and impeller are working. I don't see any kind of pee hole on this motor. Is there any other way to confirm that water is indeed circulating?

Type C is used mostly for hydromatic and electramatic shifts. Those engines will not shift if you use the regulal stuff. Sierra still sells it as "type C"

I used Type C or Premium Blend in my '60 Johnson and it worked fine. But like petrolhead said Hi-Vis can and probably should be used. I just replaced mine today and no probs, actually fixed a shift problem I had.

For your motor, the Bombardier HiVis or UltraHPf (semi-synthetic) are now the recommended gearcase lubes. As was posted earlier, Type A grease is now called Triple-Guard. These can be purchased at any Johnson/Evinrude dealer.
