old merc cant find the year

I had gotten a boat over the summer with a engine. Its a 1400 merc serial starts in 294 <br />anyone have an idea on the year of this engine?

anyone have any ideas could it be a repainted model? The boat was a 76

It is pre 1972.

thanks for the reply andy after looking at the engine i can tell its been repainted. I just wasnt sure also didnt think the engine would be older than the hull. from what the owner said he thought it was a 75-76 but i couldnt find matching numbers.<br />thanks again for the fast replies guys<br />garrett

one more question on this engine<br />i replaced the transom. should i use the old holes as a template and drill new ones in the transom or wait till they mount the engine in the spring?

Hi, guys!
I've just recently bought an old boat with a Mercury 60hp, 3cyl, 2stroke.
The motor has serial 9385915. Wondering what year it was made. Can't find it anywhere on the web.
Really hope you guru's can help me out.
