I have a Merc 350 that looks similar. Doesn't run, but I'll let it go for half that price - or a quarter - or maybe I'll scrap it. Those machines are very hard to work on which is probably why they're so rare.

Well, I suppose i agree that he is asking too much but it does have a racing lower unit. About a year or two ago, I saw a Chrysler racing lower unit and exhaust stacks go for 1600 on ebay.

To a collector, what is a pristine racing Merc worth? At auction who knows? The sky could be the limit.

Mercs were white for a few years. IIRC 1959-1963 for most models, but some models did go Phantom Black in '63

Due to its rarity I bet he will get close to 3k for it. But I agree Tom I had a '67 Merc and it was a pain even getting to the carbs. And even the link and sync was rediculous.

There is a shop in Fox Lake Il. that has an even older Red one that has been restored which also has the racing lower on it. That one though is not for sale.

With such skinny lower ends did they have F-N-R or were they just solidly geared to forward? It doesn't seem as there was much room for a clutch down there.

Sutor, wow... expensive is right. Again a stupid question but I couldn't find the answer in the "Evolution of the Quicksilver racing lower unit" link. Do these super sleek lower units allow for forward neutral and reverse or just neutral and forward or just forward. It seems an awfully narrow space to put in a standard type of gear clutch. My brother used to have a Mercury 20hp short shaft motor that had a red cowling with a white neck and was used on his hydroplane. I can't remember if it had a reverse gear or not.

The unit on the Merc 800 linked above is not a Quicksilver lower unit, rather it is a Speedmaster style, made for the larger Mercs. They were direct drive units - no neutral or reverse. The Speedmaster, and subsequent Super Speedmaster went through many incarnations and improvements as motor horsepowers continued to rise. They did come in righthand and lefthand rotation versions. The Quicksilver lower units (only used on smaller 2 and 4 cylinder models) were direct drive, lefthand prop rotation units only. Start motor and hang on!
