I have a 1966 65hp(4cyl) and a 1972 50hp that both are showing low compression. I would like to rebuild one (if not both) of my outboards. I've never rebuilt an outboard. I've rebuilt a few smallblock chevy truck motors. What manuals should I look for to tackle these projects? Thanx, Mike

Re: Old Merc rebuild

Sound like a good project. Check ebay for manuals. I rebuilt my 115 merc without any problems except on it there was no head so I had to put all the pistons in after they were attached to the crank. I used metal straps about 3/4 inchs wide to keep the rings compressed and just taped them together were the ends met. I also drilled a hole in the strap so I could see that the rings stayed in place since on a two stroke the rings can not rotate because there is a pin in the piston to keep this from happening.<br />It would be alot easier to borrow a ring compressor or take it to a shop and let them put the crank in. Other than this it was a piece of cake.
