I have a 1939 serial No.K2-1393 No model number which I believe is a 3 horse 1939 outboard. What kind of compression should I expect from this motor, and am I correct on th age of this motor? PS, What is the correct points gap? Thanks in advance.

Re: Old Merc ?

Seeing as I put this one out about a week ago and had asked a few ? on it and got no replys, I'll simplify it by just asking about the year of this motor.(Plus Im putting it back on the 1st page). Could someone verify that it is a 1939 motor? Grubbs Marine goes back to 1940 and my motor did not resemble the pictures I saw. Thanks.

Thanks, RJust and andy, I will try them both out. Oh' and RJust my newer motor that I just rebuilt is a 1949 5 horse Mercury. With any luck it will be my trolling motor for my '76 Winner boat.

K-2 is a 1940 3HP, designated a standard, it has a Eisemann mag. pts are .018, plugs J8C at .025, this engine is a bushing engine and must be run 20 to 1. As far as compression back then they didn't worry about it much as a matter of fact, when I first went to mercury school in the 60s that taught that it meant nothing as long as it was over 60# and said if it was low add more oil, funny how things change isn't it---Bob

Laddies, thanks! Nothing like runnining into someone with knowledge. Mine is running low at 45 psi. guess it needs more oil. I'll get mine running and let you know how it goes.
