This is about the first model power tilt that
OMC made (not trim). Pump outside the bracket
feeding a single cylinder on the inside of the
bracket which replaces one of the two shocks.
A seperate mini cylinder which operates the reverse
lock release. It is on a transom bracket for
a 1971 115hp (My moter is a 1970 85hp but the tilt
unit doesn't seem to care).

The pump operates well, tilting it up and down
even while under power at low RPM's. However,
most of the time it will slowly lower back to
the down position while boat is sitting at dock.
(Think leaking release valve).

I cannot locate a manual which describes this
particular tilt unit (have tried two different
factory manuals, and the seloc manual).

I made a half hearted attempt to look at it this
spring, but was not able to remove release valve
after removing snap ring, and I wasn't comfortable
working on it without a manual.

A) Does anybody have any suggestions for what
is wrong and how to fix it?

B) Anybody have the manual pages for this unit that
they can photocopy and send me (I'll reimburse expenses of course)

C) Source for spare parts?

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Mike:

I haven't found manuals to contain much useful information with respect to tilt/trim systems. I have however found the patent for my particular unit on file at the US patent web site and the drawings and text have been very useful to me. Mine is a newer model than yours and is covered under patent no. 4,395,239 filed by Hall; Charles B. (Ingleside, IL); McBride; Edward D. (Waukegan, IL); Young; Robert F. (Kenosha, WI). Of course they all filed for the outboard Marine Corporation (Waukegan, IL).

Poke around the web site at http://www.uspto.gov/patft/index.html and you may find your unit. Usually the same engineers' names will show on various patents as they evolve so the names above would be a good place to start.

Good luck.

This is from The Clymer Evinrude / Johnson Manual for 48 - 235hp from 1973 - 1990. I know this doesn't cover your engine but it may shine some light on your "problem".

"The power tilt will temporarily maintain the engine at any angle to allow shallow water operation at slow speed, launching, beaching or trailering."

The way I read that, it's suppose to bleed down.

c/6

Hooty
