Weirdness. I posted a while back I needed to find a coil for my Ted Williams. ScottGuy sold me coils. BUT...

Low hour (less than 20) '69 Sears Ted Williams, mfd by Scott/McC. Model #: 574-60760, S/N: 700355R12-1554

Motor starts, runs/idles (well) on 1 cyl (top). We can pull bottom plug while running, no change. Coil appears good. Swapped condensors, swapped plugs (all look good). Top cyl runs, bottom doesn't.

Bad wire? We have spark (good spark) on bottom plug! Plug gets wet with gas when it is in the motor. (We took the plug out, tested for spark, and knew there was plenty of gas when 1 pull started a fireball outside the motor! Good vaporization even!)

Used our finger to check compression thinking bad rings, but it pulls just as well as the top does!

So, we have what we believe are good coils, good points, good condensors, good plugs, wires are iffy, but I wrapped them in tape, gas is being delivered, seem to have compression, but the bottom cyl does not fire!

Gas/Oil putts out the exhaust, no power, rough run, etc... It was running well (8 years ago), then started running rough, then died. Took it to a boat shop, they told me it was a bad coil, dumped it in the barn when I couldn't get parts. Recently ressurected, but I can't get it to run.

Now I did NOT change the two coils. The two in there look like they're in great shape, and seem to be delivering spark to both plugs. The "new" coils didn't have wires attached, and we didn't feel comfortable yanking out the ones in the old coils. (Can I use any spark plug wires cut down?)

Is it possible there isn't 'enough' spark? Or maybe as I throttle up, the wire flexes and I loose spark? Ack! (And it hurts like heck to pull the plug wires off while the motor is running! Yes, the bottom one!)

Swap coils, Check to be sure points are set to.020
at the highspot on cam.If adjusted wrong it will throw the timing off on that cylinder.Any solid
core wire should work as a replacement
Do you have a solid spark, nice snappy blue?
Weak spark wont work under compression.

I do have nice spark (as far as I can tell) on both cyls. And gap is 020 on both sides.

I know which isn't firing, and I now have two 'known good' (per seller) coils, so it shouldn't be such a deal to change them out. My concern is those wires, and mating the wire to the coil properly. I can just go to a boat shop and buy the wires? Do they just jam in the little holes in the coils? Do I epoxy them in? (There appears to be a yellow substance (glue) on the ones currently in the motor.

Sorry I'm such a neophyte at this, but I want to rule out my incompetence as the cause...

You seem to be convinced that your problem is ignition, yet you have proven several ways that ignition is not the problem.

I'm going to guess that you have only one carb on that 14, which rules out carb.

What is left? Compression and scavenging.

Use a guage to check compression.

Inspect reed valves and any gaskets on the bypass covers, etc.

Good luck. :)

Well, I'm not convinced. I'm a neophite, remember? :) Yes, single carb.

OK, I will try to get a compression tester to see if compression is about equal on both top/bottom.

I don't understand the reed valve/bypass comment however. How do I do this? I do have cooling/exhaust coming through the two little holes (largely tainted by gas & oil from that bottom cyl.) I don't appear to have any other leaks or blow by - engine is 'clean' since new. (Been in the family since new, that's how I know there are less than 20 hours on it.)

To me, everything "looks" like it should work (based on working on VW motors.) Got gas, spark, compression? You go!

I suspect the ignition because someone I paid WAY too much money ($75 4 years ago) to (boat shop in Minocqua) told me the coil was bad. I then spent $90 to ScottGuy for coils, but haven't changed them because I'm not sure how the plug wires are seated. But I really don't know *anything* for sure - you guys are my experts! :D

Whelp, New wires and coils now, and I probably did something wrong, because it doesn't run on even 1 cyl anymore. Anyone in the greater SE Wisconsin/Lake Tichigan/Waterford area who can pop by and tell me what an idiot I am? I'm just about ready to take it in and ask someone else to fix it again...

Well, Vdub. I owe you an apology.

I didn't realize that you were that much of a neophyte on 2 stroke engines.

The first thing I should have told you is to buy a manual or a generic book on maintaining outboard engines.

Don't mess with the engine any more until you have one.

Good luck. :)
