I have a 72' Starcraft with a 215 hp OMC Sterndrive model # TUFR-19E. I cannot get the tilt to move up or down. All I can hear is a click when i use the switch to move it either up or down. I replaced the Tilt motor two years ago, and it looks okay. I just replaced both of the sylinoids, and it has good power and it stills clicks. The clutch gearing looks good and I regreased it. Any help? Especially from JoeReeves

Check the power at the tilt motor lead, both up and down. If you have the voltage then remove the tilt motor and clean it out. The commutator is probably gummed up.

Bernando
First step in to get a manual. I am not sure what engine you have. Is it a stringer 800 serries? In 1980 that what it would be. You will fix it faster and cheaper by doing some test to find the bad part before throwing parts at it. Info I am giving you is assumeing it is a serries 800 stringer. If it is not this info not worth reading. This info is from a 1980 OMC Stringer manual.

If it is a select trim with a trim motor then you will have 4 Solenoids. If it is a preset trim then you will have two solenoids. Since you replaced the solenoids I think that is a good place to start. With the battery connected check the input voltage for 12 volts on both the tlit solenoids. This voltage should be there without hitting any switches. If you have no voltage then check the 50 fuses on the starbord side near the starter. If it is a select trim with a trim motor and it also does not work then almost certain it is a blown fuse. If you have voltage on the solenoid inputs then flip the trim switch up or down and check for voltage on the output wires. if good on the output then it is either motor, clutch or mechanical bind in the outdrive pivots. You could also check for voltage on tilt motor input wires. If you are not sure which wires are output wires then follow the tilt motor wires back to the solenoids. Note the solenoid will click even with a blown fuse. The circuit that pick the solenoid is on a different fuse than the circuit that supplies power to the solenoid. If power is getting to the motor then you need it find out if a mechanical bind in pivot pins, the clutch or the motor itself. Can also be bad motor burshes. You can pull the motor off or on the outdrive port side you can remove the three screws that hold the big 1/4 round gear and remove the gear. Then try the motor again if it turns then motor is ok. Manually lift the outdrive and see if it binds up. It is heavy but should not bind up. The tilt clutch should have motor oil in it not water or gear oil.

This should at least give you a starting point.

Good Luck and please report back to help other with the same problem.

Re: Old OMC Sterndrive tilt is not working

Have you tried the hammer just tap it they do stick after sitting if it works then you know all the other stuff is fine with mine. I was getting a clicking. Gave her tap and it started right up again. But this tells me I need to get it out in the fall if it holds out that long. I have lots of other stuff to do yet. So as long as it works even if I have to tap it a few more times. But the above post is the correct procedure.

My 93 OMC did the same thing. took it to a dealer, and within 15 minutes had it working. Did you by chance just recently service it? Because thaats what I did and it made the same sound you are talking about. Turned out to be that there was air in the system. Opende a b-nut, bled system, and wa-la works great.

My OMC was doing this, turned out the main power lead coming from starter was loose. Works like a champ now.
