Re: old outboard question

Mr. Stuart,
There's a nice looking johnson 10 hp from early 60's on ebay right now. The seller is "somethinggolden". I bought my 7.5 from her and had some trouble getting the tank but the motor was good and she seems to be an honest person--I would do business with her again. WBeaton is right---patience is the key....It seems like the best ones come up in the spring but obviously so the seller can get the best price--can't blame 'em. Let us know when you get what you want and post a pic of your rig!

I just took a look at that ebay ad, nice motor, but I'm looking for something older then that, kind of like what you have in your picture.

Re: old outboard question

here's one that's been listed for a secound time, any idea of age on this one? maybe early 60's? that tank has to be worth something so for $150, it dosn't sound like a bad deal, what do you think?

"5.5 HP Evinrude Fisherman kicker/trolling motor, runs excellent.
Motor is clean. Everything works including the slow idle knobs for trolling.
Comes with one of the original cans used back then, it is metal and has glass fuel level float and two fuel lines so there is no priming
I'll take $150 cash only, no checks or money orders, local pickup only"

oh? maybe worth getting then, 5.5 horse isn't much, but if it runs as well as the ad claims?, maybe might be worth getting

Re: old outboard question

Those 5.5's will run forever, but my opinion, it'll just collect dust 'cause you'll want something faster and if you have another person and an ice chest with a few soda pops, it won't likely even plane you out. I am kinda biased on that '59 model because the darned square cowl is not my favorite design as far as looks and I like a good looking motor. If you have it shipped, it'll wind up costing you that much more. Myself, I try to force myself to ignore anything below a 10 hp no matter how good they look 'cuase the smaller one's are too slow for me. I do hereby demand that you get a 10hp! ;);) By the way, there's a nice looking '53 10hp from CAL. on ebay too that's just like the one in my post. It sounds like it might be o.k. but you never know 'til you get it home! The '52 model doesn't have a twist grip throttle. A '56 or '57 10hp johnson is awful high on my list for looks and I'm dying to get one. A '56 15hp I'd like to have as well.
Anyway, have fun looking, I've enjoyed reading your posts.

Re: old outboard question

I'm kind of thinking along the same lines you are, I just keep watching the ads until something shows up, my thinking is it stay between 7.5 horse and 10 horse, this motor isn't going to be the standard every day motor I'm going to run on the boat, I have that 89' 9.9 for that, this "old" motor I'm looking for is just for something to mess with, work on, run on the boat every now and then, so on and so forth.

I'll post the ads I see and continue to get opinions, as for the boat ..Well, I'm still looking, but one is getting close, I can feel it, every time I'm close to finding something, my wallet starts hurting, it's pretty sore at the moment:eek:

My opinion on buying one off eBay that would have to be shipped is this, from my experience, (what little I have in the boating world) I've found that when looking at something in person that I've found through an ad, as a general rule, it hasn't been as nice as the person selling it has made it out to be, with the exception of the 18 foot starcraft I bought, that guy didn't exaggerate on anything, that boat was everything he described and then some, but the last 12 foot boat I looked at was supposed to be a really nice little 1965 12 foot starcraft, that was flawless, yet when I looked at it, it had a big goobed up patch on the floor where someone had knocked a pretty good sized hole in the bottom of it and then tried to patch it up with some silicone or something it didn’t look good at all. So I really don’t want to take a chance on something with out doing the touchy feely thing with it first.

Re: old outboard question

here's another one I saw today, although this is way to small for me at 1.5 horse as the ad states:

"1950's Boat Motor. This is a really nice Sea King I think it's a 1 1/2 hp. Very nice condition. Asking $100 or best offer"
