I have 2 Johnson outboards that I am considering selling. One is a 1975 9.9 and the other a 1983 25hp. As of 2 summers ago, they both ran fine. They have been stored in a temperature-controlled garage and are in very good condition. Both were used only 3 to 4 weeks a year, all in freshwater. My question is this, do I have something of value in these. I have been offered $100 each but that seems awfully low to me. I am a bit ignorant of the value of these things and am not finding much info online. Thanks in advance for any knowledge someone is willing to share.

Prices vary by location so I can only say what I would value them at. As for the 1975, thats a little old for my taste, still uses points instead of a CDI but assuming it really is in good shape and runs well maybe a hundred or two. Now as to the 25HP, thats a nice motor and in good shape I would pay $300 to $400 It would be like the motor in my picture above my name.

Take a look at FB marketplace or CL for similar motors, see what they are going for.....if they are in running condition they are worth a lot more than $100 each.

price is subject to location and condition.

assuming perfectly running motors that have been maintained

in the midwest, about 100-200 for the 9.9 and about $300 for the 25
here in FL could be $50 to $400 for the 9.9 (buyer dependent) and about $800 for the 25. in Canada, the price would be higher.

In northern areas these motors are not used all that much.---Short season and fresh water.-----But there are always exceptions.----Many folks do realize that these motors are long lasting with proper care.

In Canada.
This past spring I sold my 75 Evinrude 25hp for 550, my 76 Evinrude 9.9hp for 800 and my 61 Evinrude 18hp for 650. All with in a week and a half. Supply and demand as well as the season plays a role. No compression tests requested and the only one I had to start was the 25hp. The other 2 handed the cash and carried away.
The only one I miss is the 18hp, but I like my new 21 merc 9.9hp too!

Up my way folks do a lot of backwoods lake fishing and smaller 9.9 are frequently preferred and fetch good prices $500+

easy to carry troll all day enough to get you around lower fuel needs etc...

in short... it depends on the buyer and asking prices are crazy so ....go high and wait

with TLC these motors run forever ex: mid 1950's + engines still run great
my 1966 kicker 9.5hp was $50 cdn the 1959 Golden Jubile 5.5hp was $100 cdn (75U$)

The 11 year old grandson ( Western Canada ) was able to buy a 1959 5.5 HP Evinrude for $20.----Motor was stuck.-----He learned a lot taking it apart.-----Wanted to buy all the parts there and then..-----I said ---" new parts are all on the shelf " at home and you have to wait.-------I put in a newer needle bearing crank and rods.------Rings still had 1959 turning marks , so a low hrs motor.----New coils as it already had new points and condensers in it.---So powerhead is all done , ready for grandson to put back on the exhaust housing.--Should run like new when he puts it back together with his mentor.-----Note-----Not keeping track of my hours / $$$ on this project.

I would go on Craig’s list ,EBay,or market place and see what they are asking for compatibility product. They are worth what ever you can get and how quick you want to sell

I would not pay that price unless I was sure to get a pair of newer coils and a good lower unit.-----I get nicer ones for next to nothing !

Over the past 2 years, it seems that the price of small outboards has easily doubled or tripled. Based on my experience looking for motors of these sizes, the 9.9 in good shape might get $400-500 and the 25 hp $700-800.

Another factor is that older motors ( 2 strokes ) are lighter and easier to maintain.-----Many folks are realizing this.----Older motors often have cheaper parts.----Older motor can be fixed without $100 / hr dealer support !!!----There is a high demand for simplicity when it comes to small motors.

as mentioned the issue with price is you can have one that supposedly "runs great 3 seasons ago" for the same price as a maintained one. I rarely pay over $100 for a small motor as 90% of them need going through anyway. the 3 cyl 50-70hp motors i rarely pay over $200, some with power trim. the larger ones almost always need rebuilt anyway. once you learn to rebuild these, you don't want to run one without it being rebuilt again unless you get really lucky.
