Re: Old Rude won't pull?

That's why I always pop the flywheel off before I trust a 50's OMC, even if it runs great when I get it (which only 1 has, so far).
Later,JBJ

Jason, that's cause by the time you get em they've been run hard for 12 months a year for 50 years! Come get a nice Canadian version where they're run 4 months a year for 50 years and they usually run great when I get em ! :)

Re: Old Rude won't pull?

Can anyone tell me the procedure for removing the points so I can be sure they're all clean before I reinstall the fly wheel. From the way it looks to me all you'll have to do is pull the little clip on the top of the point and then it will lift out?

Will I have to change out the fuel line connector? The one on the motor currently has 3 prongs but my newer 4hp motor (also a Evinrude) only has 2 prongs. I can't seem to locate one with 3 prongs on any of the websites. Any thoughts.

Thanks for the torque specs for the flywheel.

Thanks,
Lowell

Re: Old Rude won't pull?

I'm usually too lazy to remove them, and just clean them up with some 400 grit sandpaper, a tiny squirt of carb cleaner, and a shot of compressed air. But yes, the clip and a screw, I believe. It's been a few months since I removed any.

Steve, I do try to get some motors from up north when I can, but yeah, I'll bet the Canadian motors are the best there is. Lucky for me, though, because if I could find all those cheap motors around here I'd be bankrupt. I couldn't resist getting them, and I can't stand to part with 'em.:p

Re: Old Rude won't pull?

To quote the late great, Dr. Frankenstein, IT'S ALIVE! IT'S ALIVE!!!

I actually found a local repair shop that had a new coil and ignition parts. I replaced the bad coil and the points and condensers on both coils. Man oh man that new coil will throw a spark as wide as a pencil lead and 1" long and makes a sound like a stun gun going off. I'll eventually replace the other coil once I get it on the water just to add to the ease of starting.

I got everything put back together under the fly wheel and put the throttle back together, took the motor outside and gave the carb a good squirt of 24:1 fuel and choked it down and gave her a pull, and VIOLA!!

It kicked right over and then died out once the fuel was burned out. It seems to have quite a bit of torque when it ran for those few seconds.

Now I have a few things yet to do before I put it in the tank and try to set up the carb. I have to replace the O ring that runs between the impeller housing and the tube that feeds the head. I still need to replace the head gasket, now that I know it will run. I'd like to replace the float too, that and a fuel connector and I'll have it ready for the water, hopefully.

I do have a few questions though.
Does anyone know what torque the head bolts should be torqued to?
What would you recommend I set the 2 carb set screws to as a starting point once I get it into the tank?
Is there anything else you all would do at this point, prior to running it in a tank?

Thanks again for all the help
Feeling like Dr. Frankenstein,

Read the TOP SECRET FILE at the top of the Johnson/Evinrude forum...where you posted this thread...to get your carbs adjusted right. Then go fishin.
