Hi,
I recently bought an old sears and roebuck 8 hp outboard at a barn sale. It will need to be cleaned up but it isn't seized and I plan on running it. However, I don't have the manual and I might need some parts. Any idea where I can get a manual and parts? The serial number is 641.4623 and the model number is 571.58641.

I was also curious to know how old it is.

One more thing, I assume it is a 2 stroke. What fuel to oil ratio should I use?

-Kris

Re: old sears outboard

You have a 51 6hp.It was built by West Bend for Sears.West Bend was purchased by Chrysler circa 1965 and became Force circa 1985.Fuel mix is 1/2 pint to a gallon.Use TCW3 rated oil.
Parts will be hard to find. You could try at www.aomci.org or watch ebay parts and parts motors appear regularly. As far as a manual try ebay for an an aftermarket manual that covers many brands.West didn't sell domestic motors until the mid 50s but Elgin or West Bend information should serve.

Re: old sears outboard

Well I just got around to checking the old outboard out. I did a quick triage so I don't waste too much time with something that won't work. The Wico magnetos look to be in bad shape. The outer black insulation is all cracked and falling off. How do I test these to see if they are ok? Also, if they are bad, where can I find replacement ones?

Can't tell you how to check coils but if they are cracked and flaking its time to replace them.
You should also figure to replace the impeller.
Check the sites posted above for parts.

The impellar seems to be in good condition. I pulled it out and it is flexible. Although one of the fins has a "set" to it where it was compressed for a period of time. The rest are good though.
