Re: OLD Sears outboard

Motor is air cooled with a water cooled leg there is a pump in the leg
above the prop.Check the spark.Should jump 1/4 inch with an audible snap.
Go through the fuel system with attention to cleaning all passages and jets.Don't forget the tank outlet.

Re: OLD Sears outboard

Thanks for the help! I think I found the issue because I took the boot off the sparkplug wire and found that it was rigged with the spring of a clothes pin and pushed into the wire. It was very loose so not making contact. Now i have to find a wire that will work that is not rigged up.

A few other questions: Sparkplug gap, What should it be at?

What is the fuel/oil ratio? 45:1?

On the front where the carb is, what should be there? I have a metal skirt that goes there. So is it supposed to be that way?

Anything else you can tell me about this motor?

And last but not least: Is there a service/repair manual for this motor?

Re: OLD Sears outboard

Plug is a Champion J18Y set at .035.Fuel mix is 48:1 about 3ozs per gallon.
using TCW3 rated oil. There are aftermarket manuals that cover many brands below 30 hp. A motor specific manual will be a tough assignment. ebay is a good place to look for both. You also might try the scott guy at "ask the scott guy".You may find a manual at the library.
My info doesn't show any air deflector on the 4hp.The motor should have a lower cowl.

OK Well I think the magneto is shot and needs to be replaced. Now I was told by someone that works on small motors that the magneto should be the same as a lawnmower one of the same hp because the amps and voltage should be the same. Do you think I can use one of those?

Re: OLD Sears outboard

Hi, I just bought a used motor that looks just like the one pictured in the original post. I have a question maybe someone can answer.

The person I bought the motor from made mention of changing the lube in the lower unit. I removed the two screws at the bottom and nothing came out. Upon further observation, it appeared that there was a cover that those two screws were holding in place and not drain/fill screws. I pulled off the cover and there was no "oil" type lube, but thick grease. Is this correct? What type of grease should I use to re-pack the lower unit? How do I remove and replace the water pump?

Thank you in advance, Pat
