I have a '63 Golden Jet 400, 4 Hp. Eska model 1121-A. It has a Tecumseh 634 power head. I have bought several Eska manuals, but they aren't for this poor thing. It has a diaphragm carb, no clutch, just a simple throttle. How do I set timing?

HELP!?

Re: old small Eska help

The Tecumseh V51 motor is used on 61-67 motors 3hp,4hp,and 5hp
The 4 appears in 61-65.
The Tecumseh section of my after market manual covers timing.
Is there no timing section in your manual?
Directions are a little un clear but basically those without a governor
Rotate the stator fully clockwise and tighten the 2 clamp screws.
There is a more involved procedure for those with a Governor.
And there is a Sync procedure in the Tecumseh fuel system section.
If you need the governor equipped timing I'll be glad to post it.
I have an Abos 6th edition, volume 1 aftermarke manual, covering many brands, that covers 65-72 Eskas and Tecumseh, a Abos 4th edition volume 1 covers 61-67 .You may find one at the library.

Re: old small Eska help

The only info I have Is the V51 number.It is a split case.2 " bore X 1 5/8" stroke.
The diaphram carb is a HL series Tillotson. The V51 uses a closed end cylinder with no removeable cylinder head. V61 has a removeable cylinder head.V81 back to a closed end cylinder. It appears the 3 and 4 used the V51.My Early manual indicates Champiuon J8J plugs probably now J8C set at .030.Later manual the 1965 4 uses a champion J13Y.set at .030.This info is from the Eska section.Tecumseh section is slightly different referencing the Eska info for outboard application.
