old speed boat find

Dont know if this is the right place but i wanted to tell everyone about my find i will post pics later...dont exactly know what kind of boat it is but looks like a James Bond speed boat..it came with a 200 evinrude supposed to run but if not i'll rebuild it, 6 life jackets and a bunch of odds and ends got it all for $250 without a trailer and they delivered it !!!

Notice in the last picture there is an electric fuel pump i can find where a stock one would go does anybody have an idea where the original was located..i am pretty sure this motor is a 1976 but i havent gotten the model numbers yet thats just what it says on the air box but it could have been changed out before thanks for any help on the fuel pump oh yeah its a long way from being on the water but i hear ya i am very cautious especially when speed is involved not to mention the no brakes thing lol

yea i remember a boat like that in one of the james bond films, tho i dont remember which one it was.

so what all is wrong with the one you got? how are the transom and stringers?

also yea that boat is gonna freaking move across the water and with that flat botton be pretty rough in even small chop, but for the money if the stringers and all are good and if it runs its a steal. and will be a blast!

In looking at some of the parts on your motor, I would say that it probably is a 1976 ERude.

As for the fuel pump, the stock setup consists of two OMC vacuum/pulse units, which should probably be mounted on the port side, ahead of the starter. They are the three hose type that receive the impulses via one of the hoses, which attaches to a nipple on the engine. I believe the nipple on your motor is located on the bottom of the intake manifold.

My own choice would be to get rid of the electric pump, and go back to the original setup. The bad news is that the pumps cost about $81.00 each, plus you will have to relace all of the hoses, T fittings, clamps, etc. I think you are also going to have to go through the engine pretty thoroughly, because in looking at the rats nest of wires (coil wires, etc.), who knows what other "make shift" fixes have been made.

You might also want to buy a parachute ..... I think that boat is going to "fly" with a 200 on it!

havent had time to check the stringers and transom yet but i did buy it for the motor only but can get the title...the more i look at it the more i like it lol i'll be checking the transom and other parts this week when i have time...oh yeah dont worry the electric pump is history i have never liked them i have had 2 on very old motors that didnt have manual pumps (supposed to have the old pressureized fuel tanks) and they had too many problems....that explains alot because i seen the two mounting holes for each pump but there wasnt the third for pulse but i'll find that nipple you talked about...thanks again

Split, The boat might be a sidewinder. They had a shape like that, as well as a windshield like that.

I would think a 200HP motor is above max HP, unless the boat is an 18 footer or so.

The first thing you need to do is to purchase an OEM service manual. In order to do that, you will need to confirm the year and model. Look on the transom bracket for a data plate.

The ERude model number for a 1976 200hp will be either 200640S or 200649S. If its the Johnson version (someone might have put an ERude hood on it), the model numer will be 200TL76S or 200TXL76S.

i've got a seloc manual best $30 i ever spent its not oem but it works..i havent measured yet but i would guess 16-17 ft long..just been so busy lately havent had time to fool with it maybe this evening i can mess with it... i got the model number off of the welch plug on top of the motor block it said 200649S then there was a number under that one it was 10002211 i believe it is the serial number thanks Jason

Trust me on this one - go get an OEM manual for the specific motor that you have. The aftermarket manuals try to cover too many engines, and leave out a lot of critical information for each. You won't regret having a manual written by the people who made your motor, and you won't regret having one that covers your motor only.

If you are not sure where to find one, try right here at iboats. You can also look on EBay and a few other places.

I was thinking it might be more along the lines of a Checkmate or a Baja, probably the same vintage as the boat. The windshield itself is probably worth what you paid for it if the boat is no good...

Baja is a good boat. I will bet on the age and looks I would look real close at the stringers and transom. If it was in my yard (not counting the snow that I am covered with....) I would restore it

That electric fuel pump is not a bad idea but I would possibly relocate it away from an area where it could ground out. Many boats use electric fuel pumps with inboard engines.

I would also recommend doing away with the electric pump and return it to original diaphram pumps.

I concur on the Baja being a decent boat. With that much motor on the back the boat had better be rock solid - transom, stringers, deck, etc. I'd rebuild it in a heartbeat!
