I'm restoring a 40 yr. old houseboat which has the original galvanized steel gasoline fuel tank. It's not leaking and has no external corrosion. Question is, what's the useful life of such a fuel tank? Should I replace it?

Re: Old steel fuel tank

If you can drain it, do so and use a light and inspection mirrior to look inside for excessive rust or scale (major corrosion). You might also try to presure test it to 3 psi and use a soapy solution on all joints and welds. If it looks good there's no reason not to keep using it. When I was in the navy I worked on some ships that were vietnam era and still had original tanks and they were in great shape. It really depends on the maintenance done over the years.

you might want to look into The Eastwood Co. They offer a line of auto restoration tools and supplies. One of their products is a fuel tank sealer. You pour it in and evenly coat the inside and the tank is sealed forever.

If it does need replacing, or you just want to anyway..just out Moeller http://moellermarine.com/
They have a full line of replacement tanks out of plastic. I've bought from them several times and had no problems.

Hopefully, your steel tank will check out okay.
