Do I really need to reinstall this snap ring on my older style merc 165 bell housing? The newer style gimbal bearings really press in much tighter than the old one.

Re: Old Style Gimbal bearing snap ring

If ya got run it. Although I doubt it is necessary with the newer bearings. I would hope Don or Havasu Boatman would jump in here.

I have installed the new brgs in the old stuff and faced the slots out for easy replacement in the future (don't have to pull the whole thing out just turn the brg on edge and pop it out).

If you have the gimbal zerk on the transom shield make sure you line up the hole on the outside of the brg housing with it.

Crap this thing is a pain (snap ring). Any greasing I should do to the bearing? No zerk on the bellhousing. I do have the factory manual, but it doesn't mention grease.

is that snap ring being a pain because ya don't have some big, giant snap ring pliers? if so, go to harbor freight and score some big giant needle nose pliers, chineese type. think i got a three pack for $12 or so. then i filed a slot in the tip of one to help grab the snap ring for removal and install.

i was personally ridiculed (in a nice way) for putting my snap ring back. i think the notion being that on the later versions of the alhpa1 the snap ring and slot don't exist. so i was under the impression it wasn't necessary. but i still re installed it even though i caught flack.

if ya have the new style gimble brg. that's permanently lubed. i'd think no grease. if ya got a greasable brg. there is a tool ya can get to pre grease it prior to install, which is a must do item. seems like the new, permanently greased brg. would be a perfect application for folks that don't have the zerk to grease it during PM.

Love the way you think.... :D:D

Please don't EVER do this.... The Merc manual is very specific about it, and Merc issued plenty of service bulletins about it. Most people who do it get away with it most of the time, but do you want to be the one who has his gimbal housing destroyed as the bearing flies apart, with no warranty from Merc, or the bearing manufacturer?

During the 90's Merc started to install them with the slots forward, specifically so people couldn't replace just the bearing.

The bearing and its carrier are matched, buy them as a set and replace them as a set. Nothing less.....

Ayuh,... Merc tossed that snap ring right after they built your drive...
I'd toss it too,... It's Unnecessary...

I would toss it.Once the drive is installed there's no place for it to go.
