Im will try to be as descriptive as possible.
My boat has the old style drive. It is a 1977 model, 165hp Mercury. I believe this is called the pre alpha or the pre R.
This summer, after it sat for a year, I pulled the drive and changed the water pump, prop shaft seals, and all other maintenance associated with removal of the drive. After I got it all back together I ran it in the driveway on the water hose for about a half hour at half throttle. Everything appeared normal. It shifted from forward to reverse good decent. A little slow and with some grinding going into reverse. I tried to adjust the shift cable but just could not get it right. I got it adjusted in the best position I could find to shift quick and smooth. The next day we headed to the lake. I might add that while re-installing the drive onto the boat I had trouble getting it to seat up to the housing on the boat. After pushing on it a few seconds I pulled it back off and checked it out, then shoved it back on again. This time it went on fine. I believe the shift cable had slipped out of position and was pinched somehow.
After a test run in the driveway I took it to the lake. After backing away from the dock and moving it to forward to leave the marina it took some time getting it into forward gear. The first time the gears ground and it did not go into gear. I throttled back and gave it another try. This time it clunked and went into gear. After an hour or two of cruising the lake at about mid throttle we went back to the marina to load and go home. I stopped in the middle of the water while waiting for my turn to pull to the dock and load. After about 5 minutes of sitting idling in neutral a space opened to pull up to the courtesy dock. This time the boat ground going into gear again, then after 3 or 4 tries finaly went into gear. When I got the trailer backed into the water, started the boat again to load. This time it would not go into either forward or reverse. Pulled it onto the trailer by hand and hauled it home.
In the yard I again ran it on the hose. In the yard it went into and out of gear fine.
Is this a sign the shift cable is bad? Is this where the trouble adjusting the cable came from? I was trying to adjust it by the book.
Is it possibly a sign of something internal in the drive causing this?
Thanks for any replies and ideas. Sorry for the long post but did not want to leave anything out.
