Old Tiller Evinrude Steering Question

You have my sincerest gratitude if you can answer this:

My dad has an old 10hp Evinrude - 1958'ish (sportwin?) that is tiller steer. We use this for trolling reservoirs on his 14ft aluminum boat.

Long and short of it: The motor use to sit still where you had last pointed it and let it run slow (near idle). The motor now wanders when trying this and is quite annoying when trying to troll. It's like something needs tightened back down, but I can't seem to find what (if anything) that I could possibly tighten to get it to sit still again.

Thanks

Most will have a screw with a spring on it as a friction control. It would be somewhere on the pivot shaft (vertical).

If no luck try a couple of bungees holding it centered.

There should be a tension screw someplace on the engine.

I'm pretty sure the screw your looking for is on the driveshaft housing just below the engine. I have an older model and it looks like a large clamp.

Sorry about the delay in getting back on this.

We found the screw. Your information convinced me to going back to looking for it and there it was! Hard to see with it mounted on the transom, but it was right underneath the carrying handle.

Thanks guys!
