Old Transom

I bought an old 14ft aluminum V-hull (1965-1975) several months back. It came with a 5hp motor now I will be up grading to a 25hp. My concern is with a larger motor comes substantial added weight. I am unsure the current transom will support the weight (although its max hp is 40hp) This boat has a wooden transom and the wood now is severaly splintered (more like particle board in the upper parts (the part where the motors clamps hang on to). I am wondering if there is any transom kits or repair parts for aluminum boats with wooden transoms? Or what is the best thing I should do.

"Tight lines"

Re: Old Transom

TXredfish,

Replacing the wood in the transom of an aluminum boat is relatively easy.

If it's covered on both sides, with aluminum, it can be a little more time consuming.

Typically, the wood is held it place by bolts. Just unbolt these and lift the old wood out. There may be a few rivets that have to be drilled out. Try to get it out in as close to one piece as possible so that you can use it as a pattern.

You can make a new wood trnasom by laminating two, three or four pieces of 1/2" plywood together. Simply cut each piece to size and glue them together with waterproof glue.

Once that is done, coat the entire wood assembly with epoxy and reinstall in the boat. That's it.

I just did one, I can send you pic's if you like.

Re: Old Transom

Now looking back at transom I understand what you mean. Although all the nuts and bolts will have be stainless steel. Does the type of wood matter, because I fish saltwater and there are some woods that are harder and more resistant than others?

Thanks, djohn
And I would certainly like to see your pic Blackphyre@aol.com

TXredfish,

The type of wood is not that important. Stay away from treated wood. Coatings (epoxy) will not stick to it.

You are correct, stainless bolts would be needed. The old ones probably are.
