Old vs. New...

My boat is a 1975 Checkmate MX-15 which is sitting on a 1975 trailer (I don't know the exact year of the trailer, but I assume it's from that era). It's not in bad shape, but does need a tune-up and paint. Does a 1975 trailer weigh less than a 2011 trailer for a 15 foot boat??? What are the advantages of a new trailer???

I don't care about the age of a trailer, only the condition. If the axle(s) are in good condition and the roller/bunks and lights all work properly, it is a good trailer. It is also pretty easy to fix/replace anything on a trailer. Weight won't be a large difference. Small trailer technology hasn't changed much. If you need a lighter trailer, all you can do is go aluminum.

I have 2 trailers here at present, both relatively the same size. One is an early 60's Gator and is made from C channel steel. The other is a 1997 Spartan that is made from square tube. My best guess is that they are very close to the same overall weight and would bet there's less than 50# difference between the two.

i'm with 'wifisher'. its all about the condition! odds are you're probably better off with an older trailer due to craftsmanship and the quality of materials used.
