Hi,
I read the sticky on identifying the outboards but i can't read the serial number.
It's mounted on a 90's hull. It's an inline 6 with a wrap around tin cowl. It has two coil packs (not a distributor). The decals are blue and white.
Any help with a range of years and i can get parts for it.
thanks

Motor is 1979-1988. Try to find a serial number on a welchplug and look up the exact year at Maxrules.com

Hi thanks for the response. I tried to do a search on a "welchplug" and came up cold. What is a welchplug? and i thought i knew everything.:D .
The fact that it has the tin cover makes me think it's old . The two banks of coils makes me thinks it's newer.

A welchplug is a soft metalplug in the carb or block. Sometimes Mercs have these with serial info.

My 86' 115 has 6 coiil packs, so I'm guessing yours is much older than mine. The blue graphics stopped earlier too. The serial is on a tag on the transom mount somewhere, mine was A959xxx which is 1986. Once you have that, go to the stickie on this forum to go to the Maxxrules page which will let you look up your serial.

Smonska, Your motor has 6 coils and two switchboxes, as does luskateer's motor. I am not sure it is accurate to call them coil packs.

So those are called switchboxes.........and i guess i have 6 coils..... I was in hopes the wrap around tin would help in figuring the year. I'll check on the welchplugs when it stops raining.
thanks for feed back.
