Should I buy a 77 johnson 25 hp short shaft with electric start or a 91 johnson 25 hp with manual start.

the 77 is around $500

the 91 us about $1075

am i better off with an older motor with electric start or a newer one with pull start? thanks!

28 years young. And a rugged strong young man capable of ripping a cord to start an engine :)

Re: older electric start or newer manual start?

Only you can answer this question. Do you need/want the electric start or not? Personally, if they were in the same condition I'd get the 1977 because of the price and electric start. I upgraded a 1987 20 hp manual start to a 1988 30 hp manual/electric start. I never use the manual starter anymore and I wouldn't go back again either.

With that said, the 1991 is the better motor. The 1977 is less powerful and doesn't have thru-hub exhaust.

BTW, I'm 34 and very capable.

Go for it strapping young lad. Get the newer motor if you can and want to afford it. It will keep you moving fast as you age, and gain weight from drinking beer!!!

If your on a budget and just want to fish and wont be out much or dont plan on using it much get the little electric motor, of course make sure theres a battery somewhere in your budget too and they only last a few years....

Personally at 44 and strong I'd be yankin'

:) Have fun!!

Get the one that is in better condition then. Newer is not always better, especially if the newer one has had a rough life with no maintenance and the older one has been well cared for.

I am 72 and perfectly capable of hand starting a 25 (or bigger). But I have electric start and remote controls for convenience. It's a matter of choice.

i'm 60 and capable, but i don't want to. 30 years ago, it thought electric start on that size motor was silly. when i was your age we use to rope start a 115, because the battery was dead.

I personally prefer the older with electric start.

Hey F_R : does that age of yours correlate to the manual start rope length ! (thats how you can pull those big motors over with no problems). you da'man. cheers!
