The motor model number is 9722M. What year is this motor? Also when it is laid down on its "back" gear oil began to leak out of the lower exhaust. I take it that this is not normal. Whats going on and how much to fix? Thanks for the help.

That is a 1967 model. Typically, the unburned oil from the engine will drain to the lower unit and create some concern. If the lower unit is in fact leaking, the oil will probably have some water mixed in it and should appear creamy and tan.

If the lower unit has developed leaks, seal kits are available here at iboats which will fix the problem.

The oil that leaked out looked like good lower unit oil. It wasn't creamy at all, but the motor hadn't ran for a couple of years either.

The seals on the the 9.5 are singles, but they will hold 10 to 12 PSI for fifteen minutes or so on a gearcase with no oil in it.

If you want to drain the unit and use the fill hole or the vent plug hole to pressurize the unit, you can test it.

If you take it to a outboard dealership with a service department, they can test both pressure and vacuum.

Be sure that the nylon seals on the vent and fill plugs are good.
