Any help is greatly appreciated. I've acquired an older small Johnson outboard that is missing the model and serial number tag that is suppose to be attached to the side of the transom mount. There is a small button on the powerhead that has a letter M, then below is the number J2790998 stamped on it. I would like to get this motor working. Needs a few minor repairs, so i would like to know the specs for this motor. So far i can find nothing about this number regarding year, model, hp etc. Thank you in advance for any help, i can post pics of the motor if needed

Its hard to pin down models from the serial number on the freeze plug. If you post a few photos of the motor, including a side shot of the hood, we can probably get pretty close on a model/year description.

I only know the serial numbers for the Johnsons up to the early 60s, but that one will put in somewhere mid 60s

Not only that, but I love the classic look. :D

post-1960 motors to me, just aren't old enough.

If I see a mosquito problem, I just go put one of my old 5 1/2's in the barrel and fire it up. Problem solved. LOL

Make that a 1964 9.5.
They were made from 1963 until 1971. they use 1:50 mix. Just mention that it is a 9.5 NOT 9.9 and you will see that there are very many spare parts available. On top of that you can buy some after market stuff that enables you to turn it into a remote control.
I changed one from the standard one that you have into a remote control longshaft and used it for 7 years as a trolling motor to push my 19 foot sylvan while salmon fishing in Lake Ontario. It is a reliable little machine.

Just tried to go on the old omc site to check out the cowls, and it appears its been hacked.

Good job hackers, you cracked an antique outboard site, great score! (insert sarcasm here)

That's actually a '66 or later. '64 and '65 had the twist latch on the rear of the hood. "66 models, had the latch moved to the lower cowl. '63 and older was the 10hp. Post a model number for us and we can pinpoint the year. 9.9 was a '74 and later.

You got a turtle, thats what allot of folks call them. I am working on my fourth, maybe cause they are so ugly, I can relate to them...or they are a bit backwards..either way I just love them they are great little kickers.

That motor looks exactly like my 1967 Johnson 9?, model MQ-13. My powerhead "button" has a different number from yours, starting with a C, probably because mine is Canadian-built in Peterborough. The 1967 models use a different shade of green than any other year. Yours looks 100% correct in that regard.
Just about everything for a 1968 will fit a 1967, but the foot of the gearcase is different on the pre-68 models. The early ones have the little protruding "bullet" at the front of the gearcase in line with the prop shaft. I must say that the foot of the gearcase on my MQ-13 looks identical to my 1958 Johnson 7? that is sitting on a stand right beside the 9?. Another difference between the 67 & 68+ models would be the carb gasket & the fuel pump I believe.

The 9.5 was built from 1965 to 1973. 1967 was the first green colored one and the next years were a very dark green. Earlier we're an off-white called French silver.
