i have a 5.5 johnson.the year is 1954-67.the plate with the mod.# is missing,where else can you find the mod.#.

You should see a quarter sized plug on the powerhead with some numbers on it. Post a pic or two. That will help too.

from what i can see the plug says j2314394

should be plate, on transom mount just above turn bolts. may be covered work grease.

Yea, sometimes, Johnson only puts serial numbers on the plug. Evinrude however puts both model and serial number there. If you post a pic of it, that would also help narrow down the year. 1955 and older were green 56 -58 were Holiday Bronze. 59 and later were white.
