Older lower unit rebuild thread

There was a great thread on rebuilding the lower units on J/E 7.5HP - 25HP motors from 1956-1970 ish, and I can't find it anywhere. Does anyone happen to remember where it was or have it bookmarked?

I have my '59 18HP all apart and cleaned, and would just like to read thru it before reassembly.

Thanks,

Re: Older lower unit rebuild thread

OK, I think I have a bigger problem, I started to put it together and it doesn't all fit.
I have 2 lower units, and some parts off eBay. Both lower units were from 1959 motors, but apparently at least one isn't original to that motor. I found many differences, and realized that I need to keep the gear sets (foreward gear, reverse gear, clutch dog, pinion gear) together as they aren't interchangeable.

I now have most of the other parts mixed together. When putting it together the skeg would fit down tight so I took it apart and found that the pinion gear wasn't letting everything fit down tight. After removing the thrust washer under the pinion gear, it all fits nicely, but that can't be correct. Did the thrush washer thickness vary between the years? I only have 1 here for some reason and it is about 1/16 or 3/32" thick.

Any ideas? How bad would it be to run without the thrust washer above the pinion gear?

I am still struggling with this one. I have been messing with it all day and can't figure it out.

Any idea anyone?

I can't beleive this is getting the best of me...

I only have the '59 parts manual, so I can't really look up differences between years.

Thanks,
