older merc,Funky thorttle

OK we have this old merc. not sure what year older one. its an 80. anyway the thottle works n all. the only thing is we have to push it about 3 quaters and hold for sec. then we have to slam it into full thorttle as fast as we can or the Motor die's. once we get up to speed we can back down . but it just takeing off. u can slowly ioncrea speed. u half to use that method iv said. there then that nothing wrong with the motor. Theres no trimtilt. The year is 1980'something. Thanks For any help.

It could be as simple as a sticking throttle cable. Have someone watch the linkage at the motor while you operate the throttle lever (While Not running). See if it sticks or hesitates...

Ed, it could be that the carbs idle mixture is too lean, or the carbs are dirty. Hit the choke botton whne you hit the throttle. If that helps, you likely have the carbs idle mixture set too lean.
