I have a '78 Mercury V-1500, on a '79 Champion Super V bass boat. I'd like to install a trim gauge.

Under the front of the motor, hidden up under the tilt shaft, is something that could be a sender. It appears to have a push rod coming out of it, that might press against the mount to indicate tilt. (If it's a push rod, it's frozen in place.) It has two wires coming out of it that were cut long, long ago. My official Mercury manual identifies this as a "solenoid" (???) that's part of the trim system. But it sure doesn't appear to be any kind of solenoid I've ever seen, and that's where the book's information on it ends.

Is this a tilt sender?

I found these replacement senders--
"Sender Kit - Trim, Power Trim Sender Starboard mounted." Looks like it turns in the end of the tilt shaft.

and
"Sender Kit - Trim, Power Trim Sender Port mounted." Appears to mount on the end of the tilt shaft, and has an arm that hooks to an external point.

Both appear to mount on the end of the motor's tilt shaft. Trouble is, one of the steering cables goes through the center of that shaft on mine. There's no way to mount a sender there.

I also found this one--
"Trim Sender Assy, Power Trim Sender for dual station applications."

"Dual station applications?" What's that?
It sorta looks like it could be the same as the thing under the front of the motor. Same shape with 4 screws. But the picture shows the wrong side, if there's a push rod on it.

Can anyone shed any light on all of this?
