Older Minn Kota Autopilot Issue?

Hi all,

We just installed an older Minn Kota Autopilot trolling motor on our 14ft fishing boat. I know the autopilot on the newer motors will guide you in one direction once you turn the autopilot on. However on ours, when we turn it on (switch on the main bracket), it only keeps the boat in one spot. The motor will turn 180 degrees and keep the boat in exactly (or at least close to) the same spot.

It doesn't keep going in one direction, as I know the new ones do. SO, is there something wrong with the motor, or did the "original" autopilot motors only keep the boat stationary?

Actually, it is kind of nice in that I don't have to drop an anchor, even in a stiff wind, but it would be nice if it continued in one direction when we are fishing up/down the bank.

Perhaps there is a setting I am missing?

This is our first boat and our first autiopilot trolling motor. I am not sure of the model number, but it has Autopilot down the side of the main bracket and is 37lb thrust (I think).

Thanks

Actually, it is 36lb thrust, not 37lb.

Anyone have any insight on this thing?

Thanks,

I have an older 36lb auto pilot, model 865, anyway what you are discribing is not normal.Although that would be a nice feature,to stay in the same spot then move on.
Its supposed to stay in a straight line.Sounds like a faulty compass.
Does it change direction if you turn it with the pedal?
Of course you can turn off the auto pilot, will it go in different direction then?

Thanks for the response Bruce. Yeah, it will change directions if I use the pedal. It also works fine with AP off, which is how we have been using it. I am very curious what it does when we try to use it in a brisk wind.

I actual kind of like that it keeps the boat in one place.........but it would be nice if it would go in a straight line as well :)
