I have a chance to buy a 1972--50 hp mercury with the controls and with the tilt and trim, all for $100.00. The lower unit had not been drained and freezing weather pushed the prop out of the housing. Would this motor be worth fixing and are parts easy to find. Right now I have a 50 hp force 87 year and parts are sky high and the motor can't be trusted.
Thanks for any help
Ron

Re: older model mercury

HE HE HE, you bought a hole in the water where you can just throw your money into, but, anythings possible. If you can at least get your motor to run properly, especally with torque on it @ WOT, go for it.Run a compression test on it and make sure there is no differance in psi in all spark plug holes, just to ensure good pistons and rings. Make sure your gettin good spark to your plugs, rebuild your carbs, replace fuel pump diaphram, all corroded and chewed up wiring, then go from there. You can also rebuild your lower unit, but make sure you have a good motor first. $100.00 hu? That sounds like a deal to me. If you decide to not go through with the restoration, you can always totally dissassemble that motor and sell parts on Ebay. Good luck with your project, please keep us updated, I want a piece of the action too. :D
