Mrs. bh357 briefly looked at a popup camper on the side of the road. I called the owner and was able to get the following information.
1987 Palomino Pony

The Good:
Canvas replaced in 2004
new carpeting in 2004
overall in good condition
has awning (good condition with no leaks)
No known roof leaks
electrical and plumbing works with no known issues
lift mechanism, stabilizers, jack work good
bunks slide out good
icebox

The Not so good
does not include the bunk mattresses (current owner uses futon mattresses
no furnace
needs propane regulator - remainder of propane system and stove unknown working condition
no refrigerator
no a/c
Needs 1 new tire (possibly 2)

He is asking $1100 obo. What would be a good range for an offer. Camper is in SE Michigan.

Re: Older Popup Camper - Good Deal or Not

I just my popup camper about a month ago and love it!! We paid $3000 for it, it is a 2002 coleman taos. Has A/C, no heat, no frig. Has a propane stove and sink.

The bunk mattress, I would not worry about. We use a blowup mattress in ours because it is much more comfy than the thin mattress it came with. The regulator should be cheap and easy to replace, mine sits right on top of the bottle. The tires should be pretty inexpensive too. We use a small heater in the fall and it warms the camper up great. The A/C would be my wifes biggest complaint.

I think $1100 might be a little high, offer $700-$800 and see if he will bite. Be sure to point out the things it needs to be usable.

Re: Older Popup Camper - Good Deal or Not

this spring I sold my 87 palomino TXL(14' box) hardside pop up it was in good shape had new tires, rims, regulator counters and dinette ends for $1800. i we never used the stove any way and we used the fridge for storage because it worked but not too good. tires are cheap. make sure the roof is in good shape. the matresses in those pups were like 3" foam and not very comfortable anyway. air matresses work good in them. I liked the pup because it was easy to pull and I could go places with it i can't take the TT we bought. I would buy another one in a heart beat if the wife would let me. If the canvas was all replaces that cost about $1000 I would probably start the bidding at 700-750

The biggest issue with Pop Ups is getting parts for the lifting mechanism. None of the issues, you mentioned, deal with that and should be easy fixes.

-Roofs can be sealed.

-Accesories, can be added.

As long as it lifts, and the canvas is OK, go for it.
