View attachment 108392View attachment 108391View attachment 108390 Just testing these pics. Doesn't seem right, every day is a new day when you got no memory.
Sorry, the pics did not work but I think you can click on them. Tried to get the dashboard out between raindrops. It is not in with rivets I could drill so I am going to regroup and try again when it is not raining. 1 of the pics is the windshield, does anyone think it can work? It fits the contour but has no top trim and I have no idea how to attach it.

Man, I can not remember how to put pics on this thread. The only way I could be dumber is if I was bigger!

Hey, look at that, thanks man. Took me 3 times even with the instructions, I shut my brain off at 4. Anyway, the pic in the middle shows the problem I have getting the dash out. You can't really see it but there is an angle iron in the corner that won't let the dash by. It is not riveted, do I just cut it off?

By the way, I love the look of the windshield on your jet, how is it attached? After looking at a few more jet sites my guess is there is no way the windshield I have goes with the boat, I might be able to make it work but I think I will keep my eyes open for the cool looking kind.

Well, not attached anymore! There is a giant open space where the windshield once was. Ha!

It did have bolts that hooked the windshield then came down through the bow cap.

Re: Older Star Craft Jet Star rebuild

Hi & welcome to the world of Jet Star! Just came across your thread & will be following along. Looks like a great one to fix up. I like the idea of a newer motor; I stuck with a 2-stroke because of the simpler technology and lighter weight/hp. You will either need to find a short shaft motor or extend your transom up when you replace it. I went through that whole process and am about to mount my motor.

You are lucky that the paint is already coming off, that will make it easier for you.

If at all possible, I would avoid removing that dash. It can be done, but not easily without cutting it, and it is integral to the structure & stiffness of the boat. Can you replace the support boards without removing the dash? I'll have to check out how mine is built later today.

You can probably spruce up that windshield, newer ones are very hard to find and very expensive if you do find them, unless they are attached to a boat and then you have to buy the whole shebang! A lot of folks in the forum have bent and worked aluminum, maybe you can make a frame for the top. I don't know too much about that aspect of it.

If you haven't yet, check out my rebuild thread. It's a long read but there might be something helpful in there. I'm no expert but have been able to come along & gain knowledge with the generous help and advice from other members.

Good luck and I'm looking forward to seeing what you do!

I just looked at mine and it looks to me like you might be able to replace that broken board without removing the dash. Is that the only one that's broken?

Re: Older Star Craft Jet Star rebuild

Hi lakelover, I have looked a bit at your thread, great stuff. Unfortunately took advantage of a beautiful day and came home early. Mostly to finally trim the new windows in my shop but I did go back at the dash. I removed the side angle irons and just as you said it still will not come out. What a mess. I haven't ruined anything yet and can replace the broken boards and try to get things back together. Wow, I wish I had read your note before i tried, I thought I was just missing something.
Anyway, thanks for the welcome and I should have the boat in the shop sometime soon. Right now it's out on the lake for h'ordoerves with the wife, tough life!

Well, first things first! That darn lake stuff has been slowing down my progress since the beginning of July.

I had planned to remove my dash but was cautioned against it. If you haven't destroyed the brace, you should be able to get it back together. Curious to see if you can replace the damaged support boards somehow.

I have a long shot plan for the brace boards. They were only rotten towards the dash for about 6 inches. I have cut them off and am going to try to splice ends back on with sone stiff shelf brace u shaped metal, nearly the full length. As you know, the braces were put in before the aluminum hood was. They are bolted from the top so would need much destruction to remove and a different approach to reinstall. I will let you know how I make out and thanks. Enjoy the lake.

Tell ya what, when I was yanking all that stuff out of my Jet, all I was thinking was....

"Man am I glad I don't have to try and put that all back together!"

How's that for encouragement?:D

Sounds like a good solution. If you use steel though, it will eventually get pretty rusty I'd expect.

I'm a little worried about that right now. Just finished taking off the steering wheel and all other crap off the dash. It is beautiful wood but it was half covered with vinyl or something so it would have been nice to get it out and use the belt sander on it. As it is, I am leaving it in and working on it there. Maybe it gets painted.

I have bundles of the shelf bracing and it is sturdy but not huge or too heavy. I'm afraid I won't be able to keep the grandkids off the hood so I am going to try to make it rugged. I looked again tonight and the bolts were put in from the top before the hood was put on. I am afraid to take it out, particularly after the dash debacle.

All three are broken lengthwise. Only one was attached to the dash, I'm surprised the hood wasn't really bent in.

Just went to your thread and saw where starcraft65 warned you about the dash. I don't know how I missed that. What did you decide on the floor, flat or curved?

I went with curved to keep the floor lower as in the original design. I used 1/4" exterior plywood sealed with epoxy resin and painted.

IMG_1059.jpgIMG_1058.jpgAlmost too hot to work for a lazy bum like me but I did get the dash sanded and mostly back in. Also fixed 2 of the three braces. Went with all wood instead of the metal and I think it may work. Traveling to Bar Harbor next weekend and will pick up Gluvit and paint on the way. Starting to get excited again, the dash kinda set me back. Thanks for the advice everyone.
