Looks good Rg, those dashes are a real pain to replace. Mine wasn't too bad but years ago I picked up 1/4 birch ply and laminated it to it. I was able to slide it under the trim. Stained, epoxy resin and poly. About 16 years later it still looks new.

Dash looks good fresh sanded.

I have to ask those in the know what is the hang up about removal reinstall on the dashboard? I thought I took a good look at getting it out and it didn't look that tough from what I saw. Only looking, making plans to replace down the road, and not having tried to do it I probably missed the hidden factor in this.

It looked to me that the shape/angles of the wood prevented getting it out without cutting or removal of the top foredeck.

That's what I did, laminated 1/4" oak ply to the face of it, seven coats of spar urethane.

In my case, I removed all the bolts, angle iron, and screws coming in from the top trim. It was completely floating free but since it was put in before the hood was put on and is near the widest part of the boat it is very well wedged in. Tight, tight, TIGHT. I think you may be able to get it out without cutting it but be prepared for a big frustrating job. I did have a better chance to sand it once it was free but I'm not sure it was worth it.
Good luck and let me know if you do it, i'd be interested. I'm not sure I did not miss something.

I just checked it out and it looks great. Your windshield looks just like mine. How is it attached to the hood?

I need top read more of your thread, but I think you said you changed out your cable/pulley steering system. Did you just go to a newer version or did you do something else? My wife wants a new steering wheel so I was lookig at the newer steering systems to go with it.

Hey Lakelover. I saw the end result of your transom rebuild. Great job. How is it functioning? Was your original transom height 17"? Any tips for an idiot first timer?

Thanks, I'm putting in longer bolts and thicker/bigger washers & support today.

First of all, I should mention that on my thread, I added an index to the first post so if anyone is looking fo rsomething particular, they don't have to sift thru all those pages!!

The transom is so far so good. I personally like the gorilla glue for laminating the plywood pieces together. Other than that, just make sure it fits right and then I'd give it at least 2 coats of epoxy resin. On mine, after that, I used Rustoleum marine primer and Rusto topside paint (at least 3 coats if I remember right). I'm of the mind now that it isn't necessary to go to the extra expense of using the marine Rusto, their regular paint will do for that job.

The transom was originally 17"; I made the new one 19" as recomended for my particular motor. But I could have gone with the full 20" and had an easier time mounting the motor. I would think that 20" for any long shaft motor would be OK, just make sure you drill your holes so it can be adjusted up if you need to.

Re: Older Star Craft Jet Star rebuild

Thank you, I love the wood. It has some holes to cover with something but it may even be teak.

Mine was full of holes too. In the end, I just covered it all with the 1/4" and planned all my instrumentation to avoid those spots, or in the case of the steering wheel, had to drill the hole out bigger for a new steering system. The BRP system check tach/gauge I got was an oddball size (3-3/8") so I had to buy an expensive and hard to find hole saw for that.:mad:

I used the original brackets that came on the boat. I tried some new ones that I thought would just replace them, but they moved everything 1" forward and I wanted to use the originally drilled holes, so even though the old brackets were a little pitted, I used them. They'll never be able to tell when I'm flying by!:D

By the way, I love the look of the windshield on your jet, how is it attached?

These are the new ones I didn't use.

Perfect, thanks. I just figured out I have been looking at my windshield wrong, as in upside down. The top is trimed and it is the bottom that is just plexi I think that is much better. What is the bottom trim made of?
With the motor you have on that boat I bet they don't see anything but wake!

Just getting caught up on this one. Nice project! My Jupiter project, though larger, was pretty similar. I replaced my dash with a piece of PVC trim board from Lowes. Worked great. Also, definitely consider upgrading the cable/pulley steering to a modern single cable. You can get a whole system even including a wheel for around $120. No brainer in my opinion.

I went with rack & pinion steering, but if I were to do it all over again, I'd go with the rotary type. It takes up a lot less room behind the dash.

Here's a good overview of the different types:
