I too am just getting up to speed on your resto. Looks like you have things pretty well under control. I went with curved decking just like my original. I do have an unusual transom in that it was taller for a long motor. Only one I have ever seen. Lakelover did a great job extending his. Looking forward to seeing another Jet/Jet Star restored.

Nice pickup on the Jetstar. I recommend the rotary steering over the rack and pinion. They take up less room and will work for any outboard you would ever want to put on that boat. I went with a flat floor when I did my Jetstar and installed two pedestal seats. My boat is rigged for fishing and I like having the open space behind the seats. Hamilton Marine is a great place for parts and accessories. They have some of the best prices on trailer parts also. You can also score decent prices on parts at Marden's every once in a while.

Thanks hidef. I am going to check out your thread. I am not really after speed just dependability, anything from 30 to 50 horse probably. I just took the transom out, work stinks, beautiful day, out with the transom. I think if I go 20" with the new one I can use a long shaft which might allow me a late model used. I am definitely going to check out Hamilton and I do make a regular stop at the local Mardens.

IMG_1063.jpgIMG_1062.jpgIMG_1061.jpgTook a picture of the transom but it was too big to download, it certainly was bad and did come out in one piece. Only had to cut 5 bolts, could have been worse. On the way home I bought some self etching primer at the local car parts store. Hope to get the gluvit and paint this weekend. Thanks guys for all the info, this would be much much harder without this forum and you guys, I do appreciate it. You also are keeping me going, I get a little adrenalin seeing the progress from all of you, great fun and you keep a beautiful old boat out of the graveyard.

Thanks for the info, great site. My first impression is rotary but I will need to do some research.

I installed a brand new Teleflex rack system in my Jupiter and a brand new Uflex rotary in my SS. I prefer the rotary. There's a little less "slop" in it.

You will not find a better a price than here for one and it even includes a wheel! http://www.lowcostboatingstore.com/Uflex-ROTECH-Kits_c_226.html
Wow. Thanks ezmobee. Those are the best prices I have seen by far. I will catch up more on your site soon. I can't believe how much time you save using this forum, time and frustration saved. Thanks again.

Good gosh man, what a thread. I am definitely spending some time there. I am definitely going with the 20" transom. Did you have to change the corner caps?

Thanks. It only gave me a small headache and I am very glad it is done.

Re: Older Star Craft Jet Star rebuild

I would copy what Lakelover did in his thread for the transom height extension. I prefer having a 20" transom on a runabout, You can't find a build for my old girl since I restored her 11 or 12 years ago. Although you are likely to see one started in the near future. She is in desperate need of a paint job and a little TLC. She is still solid but she is starting to look ratty. Although the wife is starting to eye every 22' boat that comes up for sale. The only problem is every boat she likes is fiberglass and a stern drive :(

Hey bananaboater. My wife loves the red on your boat, any chance you would tell me what it is?

Thanks hidef, I think I will. I am a bit concerned about the corner caps, I am wondering if I can cut a small indent so the originals still fit. If not I will have to try to cut the caps or find flat ones. You gotta find a tinny 22' for your wife, think of the fun.

Lakelover, just went to peek at your transom. How did you come up with 19"/ Does that work for a newer longshaft?I love the fact that it keeps the corner caps whole, great idea. Btw, thanks for the link to the aluminum site.
I went with rack & pinion steering, but if I were to do it all over again, I'd go with the rotary type. It takes up a lot less room behind the dash.

Here's a good overview of the different types:

After lots of anguish, measuring and guessing, I finally discovered in the owner's manual (that I paid way too much for) that a recommended transom height for my particular motor (2003) was 19-1/2 to 20".

I went with 19-1/2, reasoning that if I needed to raise the motor I could, but would not be able to lower it if needed from the 20" height. With the 19-1/2" height, I still had to raise the motor up an inch to get the approx. starting height where the cavitation plate was just slightly above the bottom of the boat.

I really think that you could go with either one, but with the 19-1/2 you won't have to perform surgery on your corner caps. I was glad to not have to do that....less work and really didn't want to defile the original parts! Take into account anything you use to cap the transom if it has any substantial thickness to it .

(Can't remember if I said 19" in a previous post, if so I'll have to correct that. To clarify, the actual height is 19-1/2".)

Re: Older Star Craft Jet Star rebuild

Thanks for the info. I have been wondering about using a jigsaw cut allowing the cap but 20" straight across for the majority of the bow, certainly enough for the motor. I don't think you would sacrifice much if anything in strength but keep the caps, have a curve, and still get the 20". Any thoughts?

Not sure if I can picture exactly what you mean, but I think anything you do, as long as you maintain the 1-1/2" thickness and don't go less than the original 17" will maintain sufficient strength for any motor as long as you don't overpower. Remember all those knee braces you have there :D. The Jets are strong boats, made for pulling skiers. I think you would be good with a 20" height.

Just trying to keep from cutting the corner caps. If I leave them then go back level with the top(20") I think I will still have the strength, 20", and the original uncut caps. Thanks. I will take pictures after I cut the transom.

Re: Older Star Craft Jet Star rebuild

Finally got the Gluvit done. Unfortunately the pics are too big to download. Bought a 3/4" piece of marine plywood for $57, my buddy who owns a hardware store gave it to me for his cost. Worked on stripping more paint, cleaning up the chrome parts I took off and cleaning the windshield. Boy does that Gluvit stink, glad it is done.

Good deal getting the ply for cost, that helps a lot. I don't know, I kind of liked the smell of Gluvit. Kind of an acquired taste, like the smell of Seafoam running through an engine.

Re: Older Star Craft Jet Star rebuild

I varnished myself in a corner thinking I could shut the door to the bedroom and sleep at my half built house. That was 16 years ago and the smell of the Gluvit started my head hurting near instantly. You know, that might explain a lot about me, or at least my wife thinks it does. Very productive day so far, clean chimney, clean windshield that fits the boat, and a pretty good start stripping the top. I'm psyched, been lazy for a few weeks now and gone weekends. Even the headache feels OK. Also finished fixing an old fold up 12 gauge I'm using the first week in October, look out birds.
Great deal on the ply, I never get deals but he misquoted me and stood behind it. I'll take him fishing in the jetstar next year, I might even buy the beer.

IMG_1074.jpgIMG_1073.jpgIMG_1072.jpgA few pics. Gluvit, initial strip on the hood and the windshield laid on (right side up). I know, there is some leaves in the Gluvit, fall comes early in northern Maine.
