IMG_1096.jpg[QUI don't know why the picture is sideways but the bottom is on the left. That will give me a chance to do the bottom, I think I will Gluvit it and paint the bottom white. It's pretty bad. I will keep the sides bare aluminum.

Huron, look up Ulmcolcos Lake in Northern Maine if you can, Gods country for Partridge, I can't wait. I agree on the woods, guns and ruffed grouse, more fun than deer hunting in my mind, more action up here.OTE=Huron Angler;3485382]Nice progress RG, you will get a bunch done in the shop over the winter too I'm sure.:)

Hunting for partridge is one of my favorite fall pastimes as well.

Nothing like a good hike in the woods, guns, and some ruffed grouse hopped up on fermented berries:D

Keep up the good work, looking forward to seeing how she looks in the springtime:)[/QUOTE]

Re: Older Star Craft Jet Star rebuild

Put the red trim off the sides in vinegar for a few hours to clean it up. Big mistake. Now it is ugly pink, hope I can replace it.

I tried to salvage my red side rub-rail insert, using sandpaper, and it turned an ugly pink too. I think now, you can get any color rub rail you want as long as it's black.

Look at post #86 here: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=338523&page=4 Bananaboater had pretty good luck with his. I ended up deciding to just leave the side rubrails off.

Re: Older Star Craft Jet Star rebuild

Thanks lakelover. I have all winter now and will definitely mess with the rub rail. I'm even wondering about red stain but I may try the steel wool first. I think the color goes all the through the vinyl and taking off the outer layer may liven it up.

Right now the bottom is next. It really is in bad shape. It looks like the boat may have been totaled or something which would explain the tight rivets and barely used look of some parts. There are repairs including aluminum weld, Reasonably good work by the looks, and some pretty nasty gashes in the bottom rail. I know the boat holds water since I filled it with a hose. I will probably walk around it a few times until I get more Gluvit. I hope I'm not wasting time and money, not that I haven't done that before. Time will tell.

IMG_1099.jpgThe other pics were too big to load but this one shows the weld. The rest is just dents. The wife and I have decided the boat has some kind of horrid past that we really don't want to know. It's good and bad, the boat got wrecked but I think it was never finished and put back in the water. Thats why the rivets and so much else looks good. BS, I know, but fun.
Jas talked my wife into spending the $$ on Gluvit, thanks jas, her check book is better than mine. I need all I have for the hunting trip.

We're guessing there may have been alcohol involved, or a beast, Drews Lake monster maybe.:D The $$ from the wife is a new one on me too, love it. She thinks she's going to be the chick in the boat. I don't dare tell her chicks don't have grand kids.

Sanded the bottom a bit and ordered more Gluvit. Hope it does't get here before I go to camp.

Yup, then you'd have to stay home and slop Gluvit on and you wouldn't be able to blast grouse.:p

It's so hot up here i'm going to have to kick one to see it. Maybe they'll be getting sun on the banks. Either way a bad day hunting is better than a good day working.

The Gluvit came, but I got a call from the Game Warden last night someone broke into our hunting camp. Crooks ruin everything. Now I have to scramble before my brother in law, son in law and his brother come up friday. I'll do the Gluvit when I get back. Hope my brother in law doesn't find these guys cause he'll kill them, I might even help.

Where our camp is they will never get caught so they don't have to worry. We talk a big game but I don't shot anything I don't eat and crooks are not on the menu. I'm just glad they weren't vandels

Re: Older Star Craft Jet Star rebuild

I hope your camp wasn't damaged much. In June we went out to western PA to spend the weekend camping with all my college buddies and their families at a camp owned by a relative of one them. It was a beautiful camp with a really nice cabin and separate garage/shop. Recently vandals had broken in and smashed almost every window in the place, threw dishes around to break them, and the worst was there was evidence that they had tried to cut down this huge evergreen tree that's next to the cabin trying to drop it on it! Horrible. Fortunately they didn't succeed with the last part. Only things stolen were a TV, chain saw and an extension cord. What the heck is the matter with people?

Re: Older Star Craft Jet Star rebuild

WE GOT VERY LUCKY EZ, they only took a few full gas cans and no vandalism. The weird thing is they broke every lock on every building and obviously looked through everything. I don't know if they were interrupted, grew a conscience, or are planning on coming back with a bigger truck.
There is no explaining these people. Maybe they should go back to spanking in schools, I have no idea. It is a bit scary going to camp alone now, I always carry a gun but what are you really going to do with it. I can,t see myself shooting somebody.

Re: Older Star Craft Jet Star rebuild

I can't believe my last post was 2011 but I had a bit of a set back. I am indeed back, with slightly less inards, but raring to go. Unfortunately I have forgotten what I was doing. Got the boat bottom primed and a few coats of rustoleum, looks like crap so I am going to flip it over and put the floor in before I finish the last 2 coats. I do have primer on the topside and have marked the plywood for the transom cut. Pictures will follow.

The transom is cut and fits, the holes are redrilled, they might even be in the right place. Now it has been so long I can't remember how tall the transom needs to be for a long shaft motor.
I have been getting up nights in a panic that this stupid boat won't float. I filled it with water but never put it in the lake. I will replace the transom and drag it back out of my workshop and see if I need to take it to the aluminum man. Fingers crossed, now off to check out the transom height, I know one of you guys did it.
