Hello all, I'm new here and to boat motors also so I need your help with a problem on this Johnson 25. I know it's an older motor but it runs excellant, the problem I have is the sheer pin just behind the prop. I'm almost positive that the one that was in it when I got it was wrong. I've asked several knowledgeable people around and still come up empty handed. I have been sold some incorrect pins at a local marine shop. Can anyone give me a part number for the correct pins? I don't know what model the 25 is, but I figured all 25 Johnson's with a sheer pin would carry the same pin. Can anyone clue me in? Thanks in advance. :(

Give us the model number, which should be on a plate on the transom mount.

With that, we can determine the year and check the right parts catalog.

Hi BW
What is it that makes you think you have the wrong pin? With out a model# it's hard to get the right parts for anything. Look on your transome clamp and see if you can find the mod#. In the mean time here is a part#307949.

Wow, thanks for the fast response. The boat is down at my cousins house because he lives closer to the water so it will be a day or two before I can check for the model number. I will say that I feel the motor is a late 70 model because of the electric start, choke and steering setup, I could easily be wrong though. The pins I have are different sizes and the ones I've tried sheer really easy.

Re: Older25 Johnson?

Hi BW
The problem is that a 1978 25hp has a splined propshaft and does not use a shear pin. This was the first year for the splined propshaft for the 25hp. So it sounds like you have an earlier lower unit, or at least propshaft on your motor. the part# I gave you earlier fits most other 70's model 25hp OMC's. Sorry thats the best I can do. It seems to me there was some stink about this years ago, but I don't remember and I can find any service bulletins to do with this. If I do find some I will let you know.

Thanks alot for the time, effort ,and info Alcan. Are there any cross referene part numbers for the same sheer pin that you gave me earlier? The sheer pins in the marinas around here have numbers like a #12 or #9.

My 1972 Evinrude 25HP has shear pin part no. OMC 307949. Dimensions are 3/16" x 1-25/64" stainless steel. I probably shouldn't admit this among all these knowledgable boaters, but I have used a cut-off galvanized nail shank in past "have to" situations.

Hi BW
I don't have anything like that. If I did it probably wouldn't work for another place selling so-called generic pins. The bucket-o-pin sale. Here they are, you figure out which one you need type deal. I have bought them like this myself and still do. They are bound to fit something sooner or later. Your OMC dealer should be able hook you right up with the correct part. Remember when you ask for the part, use the part#. If you tell them the year and model# of your motor, odds are their computer or brain will come up empty and you will be right back in the same boat. This is a little game I play when tring to obtain parts for outboard as well as other things. If you tell the parts person what the part is for, nine out ten times they don't have one. Call the same person 5 min later with a part# and they got tons of them.

BW,
Was the pin they sold you Stainless Steel? I am willing to bet you need the Stainless Steel and they gave you the brass ones. I thnk Jack may have given you the right info as to it being Stainless. My 1958 35 hp has Stainless and a few times people tried selling me the brass ones. Good thing I new I needed Stainless or I'd have been shearing em like crazy.
