i just changed out the water pump parts in my 72 johnson 50hp. i did not have the 1000 sealant that the manual calls for nor did i have OMC thread seal for the bolts. i used Permatex 2 for both of these, now i am wondering if i did the right thing. Does anyone know if these will cause any problems? what is the purpose of thread sealant anyway?

Permatex 2 is a hardening compound right??
Its fine for the gasket but if you ever redo to gasket you'll have some work getting the old one off. As for the bolts I'd say pull them out one at a time and clean that stuff off them and out of the bolt holes. The OMC sealer is recommended for the bolts as an anti-sieze and works good for that purpose. When the Permatex 2 dries the bolts may be hard to get out.

2 is non-hardening. 1 hardens. My preference is their aviation stuff.

Anti-sieze probably isn't the best word. They sieze because of corrosion from the water getting in there. The idea is to keep the water out and the metal coated. The permatex will do as well as anything for that purpose. Don't worry about it and sleep well.

I used Permatex for my gasket sealing surfaces for my pump overhaul. You should be just fine. My dad rebuilt Engines back in the day and he said he used permatex for a lot of things. Never failed him..
