Hello everyone,

I have a 79 omc 140 with the stringer outdrive, got a couple issues that are bugging me.

1.) when engine is at anything higher then 1000 rpm it has little "burbles" or slight jumping every 2-3 seconds. In between the engine runs perfect. I've played with the carb and points but still no difference. Idle is fine as well.

2.) my out drive won't stay down in the water when using reverse, it pops right up. I can also by hand raise and lower it with some resistance. Any adjustments I can do or a new lift motor is the remedy?

Thanks for any help guys!

Cheers!

Not sure about the engine issue, but I think I can help with the outdrive. Does the drive go up and down with the tilt switch? If so the motor/worm gear is ok. Most likely it is the clutch that is slipping. Have you changed the oil in the clutch housing lately? Was there any water in it? Best thing to do is to take the clutch pack out and separate the disks/shims. Clean them all up with brake cleaner and then soak them overnight in motor oil before re-assembly. Some guys have packed the housing with grease instead of using oil with good success. I haven't had any water leaking into mine so I have just been staying with oil for now.

Check your carb inlet fuel filter your fuel pump output and your distributor shaft for play.

Thx for the prompt Replies guys, I'll give it a try.

My clutch housing I see is packed with grease already so maybe it's time to take er apart and clean it out.

Cheers.

Replace the grease with the same oil you put in the outdrive. I had the same issue and that corrected it.

There is a snap ring that applies tension on the clutch pack. Two things happen with that ring. It either deforms which releases tension or it snaps out of the groove. Remove it, look at the edge and you will likely see it is deformed. Simply flip it and reinstall it.

Re: Omc 140 annoying little issues

So I finally got around to tinkering around with this thing, I pulled the cover off the tilt clutch housing and the out drive started to drop?? Anyways took the clutch itself out and sprayed it down with brake cleaner and threw a shim in to tighten it up. Put it all back together with new grease in the housing and it's twice as bad. Won't even hold the out drive up at all. I'm ready to put a pin through this thing and call it a day. any other ideas?

Should be hex or torx bolt on the gear side of tilt housing that adjusts tension on the clutches. Its inside the shaft that holds little gear.
