OMC 140 Exhaust Manifold Problem

Hello, I have a 1975 OMC 140 engine. The cap on the back of the manifold where the water comes in and cools the exhaust was leaking. I took it off and the gasket was all ripped and mostly not even there. I was wondering if I could use some waterproof silicone to put it back on until I can get another gasket. Also, what kind of damage would occur if the water leaked into that middle section that the exhaust goes through.

whatever you do take care of that exhaust manifold! if there are no leaks, you have a gem. to replace it will cost 1000-1500. winterize, winterize and winterize.
