New to the boating world and hoping someone can help. The engine is an early 80s OMC 140 2.5L 4Cyl mated to an omc 400 stern drive. Here's the problem. When I put the battery back in I mistakingly put the wires on backwards (don't ask) and believe I fried the starter solenoid as evidence by the smoke and popping sound. After replacing the solenoid and hooking up the battery correctly I do not have power to anything. No lights/gauges/ect. These things worked before so I have no idea where to start to fix this. I know absolutely nothing about the electrical system in this boat or any electrical system for that matter. My bro in law does have a volt meter I can use, but I wouldn't even begin to know what to test or how to test it. Any help you can give would be appreciated.

There are 2 fuses in fuse holders. They will be held together bye a spring clip. They will be stacked on on top of the other in a metal holder. Starboard side. Oh you have a 120 2.5l.

Check the main breaker on the dash. Is it tripped? If the breaker won't reset, replace it. Or as chief said, check those fuses.

No breakers all fuses. Same setup I have. You should check all the fuses on the dash. but my money is on the main fuses blown. You can get them in radio shack.

I could only find one fuse on the port side and it looked ok. Sorry but I gave you guys the wrong year. It is a 1978 OMC 140. Here are some pics so you guys can give me a better idea where to look. Thanks again.

Pics are at this webpage

Wrong year, wrong motor, and whats this bump bull. Am I missing something.

I don't mind helping, with mechanical issues, been doing it my whole life. Sometimes i'm wrong, hey you get what you pay for.But I gain nothing but satisfaction, from finding the solution to a problem.

So here it is kiss my i guess you can figure the rest out.

I could not open the link to the web page he gives....I guess I'm missing something ... what did he do wrong? Is it because he gave the wrong year?

Re: OMC 140 need electrical help

chiefalen, I wish you hadn't felt the need to respond with such an attitude, I hardly think I deserved it. I'll forgive you though since it was probably rude of me to bump my post so soon. You know how it is when you're trying to get a project done in a short amount of time. I really only bumped my post because I wanted to know what to check next. I checked the fuse on the port side (as seen in one of the pictures) and it seemed ok as did the fuses under the dash. Sorry bout the bad link, I've re-posted the pictures here so someone can point out anything I may be missing.
