I just bought a boat and I was told that the motor is a 1985 omc sea drive, I think it's the timing gears that are shot. it's at the bottom of the motor when you take the cover, it has a hole about the size of a pencil in it. The motor turns over about half to full way around until something stops it. the crank and everything else looks ok, so I'm guessing it's in that area. Any suggestions on what it could be and if it is restorable???

Not sure just what you are describing. The engine does not have timing gears. Any chance you can post a pic of your problem? You might want to take the heads off and have a look.
