Having a start-up problem, Please help.

Symptoms: Need starter fluid when engine is cold, then after it starts up all is good for at least 30 minutes of running at all speeds. I have noticed though that it sputters while running, like it is starting to die, I have backed off the throttle then it starts running properly. When it is running poorly, I've noticed that the pulley connecting the belts to the alternator and supply pump (what is a supply pump?) quits turning. Are these problems related?

That you have to use ether is a clear indicator that something is wrong. Plus, ether is bad for your engine.

When was this boat's last tune-up? Sounds like your carb is gummed up and not working properly anymore.

The belt issue is another thing. Remove the belt, make sure your alternator and water pump/supply pump both turn freely. If they do, your belt is too loose. Adjust it properly.

Had the carb rebuilt last summer, but honestly I've never had a lot of confidence that the guy did the job right. At first he didn't want to rebuild it then he said he couldn't find a rebuilt, so he rebuilt it himself after a lot of time and many phone calls.

Ugh. Rebuild it. The kits are available (just look on the carb - it has an ID number somewhere). He may have replaced some stuff and didn't replace other things. Either way, a rebuild's in order for peace of mind, if anything!

You can do it yourself. It's not hard, just messy. The kits come with instructions.
