I don’t understand how or from where.
It was a line attached to the water separator and directly into a fuel can.

Do I need one of those hand pumps that pumps fuel From the tank?

It was 1 solid hose.
The only lines I have not serviced are the hard lines.
Hard line from separator to pump and pump to carb line. They are all tight.
Would an air leak in those cause issues?

Ok thanks. I am going to check those lines and maybe use some Teflon paste on them.
use thread sealant on NPT threads
use a drop of oil on SAE inverted flare

use teflon tape on your shower fitting in the bathroom

Thanks. I hadn’t heard of oil on the flare fittings.
I applied sealant on the threads and oil on any flare fittings between the separator and carburetor.

Short story.
Cranking issue may be due to a loose + battery cable.
Engine died on the way back to the dock. Wired in electric fuel pump and ran fine for the last 5 min.


Took it out today. First 35-40 min were great.
3k rpm with no hesitation. Though temperature gauge reached 185ish.
Lowered idle to beach and temps dropped down.

Sat for a few hours and started right up to head back to the dock.
2800-3k rpm and it was running fine.
Took it up to 34-3500 rpm and while messing with the trim, it died.
Started it again and gave it some gas to reach 3400 rpm and it died again.
Cranking issue appeared again. I lost all power. I had someone crank it while I moved wiring around the + battery cable seemed to be losing contact, wiggled it and the boat cranked like normal.
Not an issue related to the stalling, because the boat runs with the cable off, but I will get a new clamp so I can secure it tightly.
I did and feel a hear a thump from the rear of the boat too while it was dying.

Wired in electric fuel pump, cranked a few times and it started. Drove it back out into the water for another 5 min and it seemed ok. Kept rpms low because I didn’t want to get stranded.

Not sure where to go from here. Maybe permanently wire the electric fuel pump.

since you used the trim and it died, you have a bad connection somewhere - most likely that iffy battery cable

could just spend $45 on a new mechanical fuel pump. vs the $100 for a marine rated electric fuel pump, the required oil pressure switch, relay, etc.

Oil pressure switch? I thought it was just a pump and wiring.

Where can I find a new pump for $45?
Do you know what year and model of truck has a pump that I could get from an auto parts store?
3.8 liter v6 GM.

Gheez, how many...
In a Nutshell, Automotive Fuel Pumps, Carburetors, Ignition Parts, Starters and Alternators, are not USCG certified, and in Reality are Illegal to use in a Boat.

its a carter fuel pump.

summit racing has them.

same pump as 4.3, 305, and 350.


DO NOT USE AN AUTOMOTIVE PUMP

New fuel pump installed.
I noticed the fuel line was a bit stressed when the trim was up, so I re-routed it.
Made sure all dist wires where seated.
The wire from coil to cap appeared to be loose/have a poor connection at the coil.
New battery terminal installed and grounds cleaned.

Hopefully there’s no issues today.

I feel it ran a bit better today, but it may have been a placebo effect.

Got up to 3k rpm on plane and it was fine.
Wanted to go a bit faster so I went up to 3400/3500 rpm and a few seconds later it died.
It starts back up and gets to 3k rpm no problem.

3k rpm feels decently quick, no real need to go faster other than wanting to go actually go faster or see what boat is able to do.
Drove around for some time between 2K-3k rpm and no issues.

I tried 3500 rpm a second time and as it was dying I let off the throttle and let it idle for a second and back up to 3k with no issues.


What is going at 3500+ rpm?

Took it out today and hit WOT without it dying. WOT was only 3900 but I think I need a different prop.

But I did get past 3500 rpm to WOT.
The only difference this time was that I was alone and that I had added a second battery.
Could the additional weight have been a cause for the dying before? Or an additional battery was the fix?
