Is it possible the mechanical fuel pump could blow crancase oil if the tube (supposed to run to carb) is cut and hanging below fuel pump? Thanks Greg

Welcome to iboats :) Yes!
and that cut hose is a very dangerous condition!
That hose is there to vent gas if the fuel pump diaphragm ruptures...
It is supposed to prevent fuel from going into the bilge creating explosive fumes
Replace your fuel pump with the proper marine rated fuel pump now!
Fix/replace that hose to the carb. too....
You are fortunate not to have blown yourself to smithereens!
I would not even try to start it again with out a new pump...
Check your oil for signs of gas, too.....JK

Re: OMC 4.3 LG fuel pump blows oil?

Thank you! I now understand how important it is. There is no fuel leaking and I do have enough upstairs to lift the covers and run the blower before start up so hopefully I won't be smithereened. :) So if the fuel pump membrane is fine, the tube can actually discharge crankcase oil?
Thanks again, Greg

No, your pump is not fine....
There should never be anything in that tube but air......
Check your oil for signs of gas....
My advice is to replace it!.....JK

Please, please, PLEASE:

Just get a new fuel pump and all associated hoses/lines. $100 or so is probably much cheaper than your deductable and co-pay (if you were LUCKY enough or un-lucky enough to be alive to use it).

When in doubt about the fuel system's integrity, REPLACE IT!!!!!!!!

Your vents will most likely not get the fumes out of your crank case if you have fuel in there anyway. be sure to check that!!!

We do not want to use a story about you as a lesson to others on what NOT to do in the future!

Be safe!

Re: OMC 4.3 LG fuel pump blows oil?

Thank you both for the replies. I do appreciate the info. The fuel pump hose was not the source of oil I was seeing in the bilge. It was deficient however due to being disconnected and lying in the bilge (I just bought the boat) so I will replace the clear tube and connect to carb as it should be.

Thank you very much.
