They should probably checked every few years or so in salt water. You could probably go longer in fresh.

I put closed cooling on my "new" engine and drive so I don't expect to have to do it at all.

Since you're going to spend a LOT of money on a new engine and manifolds/risers you might consider adding a (full) closed system if one is available......

I will look into the closed cooling- actually had considered it once before.
I went with the original one-piece manifold/risers. (Actually found some.)
How do you "check" those? I did consider that it would be better to get the Osco 2-piece as these could be disassembled, but I didn't like the Oscos I had on my previous Stringer. Got much better life with the OMC's. Also a couple guys said these OMC's "go on and on."
What do you think of my decision to buy a remanufactured engine as opposed to rebuilding a 21-year-old one? Here are the compression specs that the boat yard gave me: (Remember the engine sat for about a week while a new starter was being ordered.)
Starboard: about 70 lbs each.
Port: 120,90,140
