Re: omc 4.3l cobra outdrive part list

I have a Seloc manual for mine, it goes into great detail. It shows how to disassemble everything and whats inside it and how to replace stuff that goes bad. very helpful.

Been there done that on a Cobra.
Are you talking about the metal plate just under the impeller?

If its the water pump adapter plate those are over 100 bucks. Its under the wear plate and second gasket.

Is this a salt water engine?

You need this kit to start,

This is the adapter plate, part #45 in the diagram,

You will also need the large O-ring and the waterpump shaft seal behind that plate.

You can also buy all that stuff directly from your local NAPA Autoparts. I bought the same kit for my (former) OMC 460 King Cobra.

They probably won't have them in stock but they can probably get it in a few days. It will be a Sierra kit usually.

If you are not getting any water in the gear lube that adapter plate is probably ok.
I had to replace mine in my last Cobra because it was corroded really bad under the impeller wear plate and the water pump shaft seal was shot.

I'd second what Gary said, if the gear oil is not milky the adapter plate and seal are probably OK, I had to have the seal on mine replaced once. I just put in a new impeller yesterday before putting the drive back on, it's an easy job, just make sure the seal around the impeller housing fits right. And as per the instructions in the OMC manual, I put a little OMC gasket sealer in the housing were the steel sleeve fits. There is also a groove in the adapter plate that lets the pump prime, make sure that groove is not clogged up with old sealer.

I am having trouble getting the adaptor plate off as well. How did you get yours off ? Vice grips don't work. And I don't want to remove the whole stern drive.
