OMC 400 Problems!

I have a 1980 OMC 140HP with the 400 stern drive in it. This last Sunday at the lake it started having a slight vibration in it. I noticed at a slow idle that you could really feel the vibration and it also turned hard when turning to the left but turned very easily and no vibration when turning right. Where do I start looking first?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I remember one time I left the boatin the water too long (in the slip at the marina for a few weeks) and growth was on the prop and caused some major vibration. May not be the case, just a thought.

Tilt the outdrive up and have a look at your trim tab. It may be loose and turned to one side.

Check the prop.I picked up a chart floating in the lake on my prop. It vibrated badly.

Prop was my first thought to. I checked it and saw nothing wrong while still at the lake, changed to a spare I had with me just to be sure and it made no difference.

I will check the trim tab.

Re: OMC 400 Problems!

might want to check that both pivot caps are tight.....if one is loose, it will cause drive to be at an awkward angle, ball gears will not mesh correctly (vibration), and may be the reason it doesnt do when turned a certain way, because thrust angle changes.....just a thought...good luck
